Hello, I'm Evelyn from Malaysia. Turning 20 on the 9th of September 2013.

Follow me on this journey of a petite girl from the island of North Borneo as she embarks on life and transitions from a teen to a young adult.

It's strange isn't it? How a click could lead you onto a piece of life. Reading about a stranger, word after word, page after page. Are you up for it?

Hold On by Evelyn Serena Totu

I would like to share with you a poem I wrote for the school magazine's creative writing section. I crafted this during my first year in Pre-U (2011). It was an emotional whirlwind of a year hence the poem's theme.

Hold on by Evelyn Serena Totu

We all live on the edge of mental illness and touch its pale and clammy hand; everyone has days when life is too painful to bear. It is sharing that prevents us from leaving.
Moonbeams dance on a frosted lawn
While tired eyes await the dawn
feel the coldness of the air
and loneliness beyond compare.

Expectations seem high these days
Accomplishing it is suicidal
We pray for strength and the ability to go on
But every step is excruciating;
Sharp, deceitful daggers await us at every corner.

In this vast, selfish and conceited land
It’s as though it’s inevitable to collapse on your knees
Those who stand above us
Can make us feel incredibly insignificant and incompetent.

Angst dwells inside
Boiling and building up to a rage
Artificial smiles are our only companion
With only morality as our realization.

Listen to the lingering truth of life
with its beseeching gaze fixed upon us.
How easy it is to give up and let go
How easy it is to exit forever more.

But wait!
Life is queer with its twists and turns
as many of us sometimes learn.
Don’t blow the candle just yet
Instead, use it to light the treacherous path
For you may succeed with another few extra steps.

Take these words and live it every day.
For giving up is a lesson to be learnt
Not an option.
