The Pre-U Experience : Part 1, First Semester
![]() ![]()
(May 2011 – December 2011)
Acceptance of
the Pre University (or formerly known as Form 6) intake went out around the
month of May. Pre-U is the government’s version of A-level, a shortcut to your
degree. Unlike A-level, the syllabuses are mostly in Bahasa Malaysia except for
Literature in English and the Science subjects (Physics, Biology, Mathematics S
and T, etc...) and based on its reputation, it’s far tougher than A-level
because the system hasn’t changed for more than three decades until now but
that’s a whole other story.
Despite not
applying for it, I got in to Maktab Sabah (Sabah College). Many students got
accepted but many chose not to register for it. I was one of those people. The
reputation of Pre-U and to be honest the idea of going through the uniformed,
school environment and sharing the walls with Form1 to Form5 students were a
sour taste in the mouth by then but since I have no other choices (and my mom’s
constant persist), I registered. And so the girl from an All Girls Catholic
school since the age of 5 had been thrust into the co-ed world of upper high
school. I’m not going to lie, the (dare I say) pro-muslim thing going on in that
school kind of shook me up for a few days but I adjusted well and met new
friends. A few in particular that I haven’t seen in years!
I’m in the ‘Kemanusiaan’ stream
and so my subjects consist of Bahasa Malaysia, Pengajian Am, History (World,
Islamic, Malaysian and Asian) and Arts. The lecturers are all supportive and most
of them would go through long lengths to help their students and I’m very
appreciative of that. The first few months were going great, presentations got
into the picture and that helped me raised my confidence of speaking in public.
I participated in the Journalism Club which produces the annual Pre-U Magazine
called ‘Borneon Wings’. The seniors (B.O.Ds) which ran the club back then were
super supportive and easy to talk to, well some of them :p They’ve helped a lot
by sharing their experiences of how to survive the next semesters of Pre-U,
some of those advices actually worked you know!
I’ve also participated in a few
competitions during this semester. I’ve participated in a few drawing contests
in school but unfortunately, others have far greater talents and one of them
happens to be my good friend, Serene! We’ve also joined a national level drawing competition
at Yayasan Sabah but did not manage to obtain a place. However the experience
was WELL WORTH IT. Other than that, I’ve went to watched my first mooting
competition held by Bond University, Australia where my seniors and a few familiar
faces from other schools competed to their heart’s content! They did well and
they should because they trained like crazy as of what I heard.
In July I’ve
watched my first MUET Inter-School colloquium competition with a few friends at
Yayasan Sabah, the lecturers brought us along to gain knowledge to see how the
procedure goes since we’re going to go through the same thing on the next semester
and it was there, where I realized that I actually had feelings for someone.
Knowing me, that’s rare because truth to be told I had a crush on a guy for 4
years when I was in high school and all of a sudden comes along this dude and
totally replaced his spot. We went out for a while and had an on and off sort
of thing till the early months of third semester. I've also volunteered performing for the Japanese delegates during their visit to our school with my girlfriends!! We performed a traditonal Kadazan dance, Sumazau. It was my first time performing on stage and I DEFINITELY had the freaking jitters and we had like what, only two days to practice? Gaaah it was NERVE WRECKING!!! But we pulled through with some ehem...minor missteps. Oh well! All's well, ends well!
I’ve also spent a hell load of
time going out with my friends during this period. More than I would like to
admit. Felt refreshing to meet new people and I enjoyed the idea of lounging around
getting to know them more. Unfortunately, getting to know a person does have its
side effects. I found out some true colours but silently forgave that person
however the person’s attitude does tend to get to my nerve from time to time but
nevertheless, I forgave him. Heh.. What can you do?
During the semester break in
November and December a few group of friends and I worked on the school’s
yearbook ‘The Bornean’ which unlike the ‘Borneon Wings’, covers the entire
school(Form1-Pre-U2), you know a yearbook. It was a tough job but tougher for
the Editor, Frances who’s a dear friend of mine and happens to be my distant
niece (we just found out =.=) but with her positive spirit and our combined
dedication and hard work, it was done!
I realized that my post is
getting longer and for shit I know most of you stopped reading at the second or
third paragraph, admit it! XD So I would like to end this post by saying, I
underestimated Pre-U and this semester had me gone through a ffing emotional
roller coaster! Damn, was I wrong!
